This week, local pilot Andrew Logan set a new Cook Islands record at the 2024 Oceania Half Marathon on Australia’s Gold Coast.

The new national 21km half marathon record set by Rarotonga resident Logan is 1 hour 23 minutes 58 seconds.

The previous record was 1 hour 27 minutes 36 seconds, set by Alfred Mateo in 1989.

Logan said it was a great experience to represent the Cook Islands at an international level alongside some very accomplished and experienced runners.

He said long-distance running requires months of training, plus hard work and preparation are the keys to achieving goals and getting good results.

“It was a huge achievement for me, improving my half marathon personal best on a challenging course and setting a new national record for the distance.”

Last year, Logan competed in the World Cross Country Championships in Bathurst, Australia, the Auckland Marathon (42km) and the 2023 Tour of Rarotonga (31km).

Most recently, he ran the 2024 Aitutaki Half Marathon (21km).

Logan said he will be participating in another marathon in a few weeks.
