(CNS): Ben Tonner KC has been appointed acting Grand Court judge to serve from August 5 to August 30, the newly established long break between the summer and winter sittings. Governor Jane Owen made the appointment on the advice of the Judicial and Legal Services Commission.

Tonner, a partner and lead litigator at McGrath Tonner LLP, has more than 17 years of litigation experience involving criminal and civil cases, including fraud, money laundering, asset tracing, regulatory enforcement, bankruptcy and reorganization, and judicial review proceedings.

He regularly appears as leading counsel in the Grand Court and Court of Appeal of the Cayman Islands. He has also appeared before the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council, the highest civil and criminal appellate court in many jurisdictions of the Commonwealth.

Toner was called to the Cayman Islands Bar in 2005 and to the Cayman Islands Bar in 2017. He obtained his LLM from the University of London in 2013 and his LLB (Hons) from the University of Warwick in 1999. He completed the Bar Vocational Course in 2000 and was called to the Bar of England and Wales in the same year.

Commenting on Toner’s appointment to the Grand Court, Chief Justice Margaret Ramsay-Hale said: “The bench is chosen from the best and brightest of the bar.” She said Toner was well qualified to serve as a judge, noting that Toner was an experienced practitioner and the first criminal lawyer to be appointed Queen’s Counsel to the Cayman Bar.

Toner is currently the Chairman of the Human Rights Commission. Other appointments include membership of the Revocation Commission, the Criminal Justice Law Reform Commission, the Bar Association and the Anti-Corruption Commission. He is a founding member of the Criminal Defence Bar Association.
