(CNS): A local man appeared in court last week for littering and was fined $300. The Department of Environmental Health (DEH) said the man dumped an unknown amount of rubbish at a property on Conch Point Road in West Bay in the first week of May without the consent of Shoreline Development Corporation. Following an investigation, the man was charged and convicted.
According to the Summary Court list on August 20, the man is Javed Ebanks from West Bay.
The Ministry of Health said the case was a reminder to the public that littering is an irresponsible act with serious consequences and is an offence under the Waste Disposal Act (1997 Revised Edition). The Ministry of Health launched the investigation after the landowner reported the littering, which is one of six investigations the ministry is conducting to ensure that illegal litterers are held accountable.
Officials said in a news release that this case highlights DEH’s commitment to maintaining the cleanliness and integrity of the environment and serves as a warning to all residents and visitors.
DEH Director Richard Sims said DEH officers should be commended for their hard work and dedication in enforcing littering laws. “We take these issues seriously and will continue to prosecute anyone found littering. Keeping the Cayman Islands clean is a responsibility we all share and we urge everyone to do their part.”
The DEH urged the community to respect the environment, dispose of waste properly and report any instances of littering. Officials added: “Together we can maintain the island’s beautiful environment for everyone to enjoy.”
According to the littering law: “Any person who throws, drops or otherwise deposits and leaves any litter in any public place so as to cause, promote or tend to cause damage to the public place by litter shall be guilty of an offence and shall be liable on conviction to a fine of five hundred dollars or to imprisonment for six months.”
Conviction could result in a $500 fine and/or six months in jail.
