His research focuses on exploring the coupling between non-relativistic electrons and nanophotonic environments. This innovative method is expected to achieve strong free electron-light interactions and quantum entanglement. His research has broad application prospects in quantum light generation, integrated free electron radiation sources, and integrated particle accelerators.

The only representative from Hong Kong to receive the award

The Science Exploration Award was established in 2018 as a public welfare award led by scientists and sponsored by Tencent (00700The New Cornerstone Science Foundation, initiated by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, aims to recognize outstanding young scientists under the age of 45. No more than 50 young scientists will be recognized each year, and each will receive RMB 3 million for 5 years of research.

Yang Yi obtained his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Peking University, and then completed his doctorate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He joined the University of Hong Kong as an assistant professor in 2022 and won the Croucher-McDea Research Award in 2024. He was selected as the Asian Young Scientist of the Year in Physical Science last year; in 2022, he was selected as an Outstanding Young Scientist (Hong Kong and Macau) by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and was selected as one of the “35 Innovators Under 35” in China by MIT Technology Review.
