Libreville, Monday, August 26, 2024 (Infos Gabon) – The Gabonese Energy and Water Company (SEEG) has explained to the public the root causes of the serious disruptions in the electricity supply in the Greater Libreville area over the past few days.
We know more about what caused last week’s Great Libreville blackout. For SEEG, these cuts were mainly due to the unavailability of certain production groups, in particular the Owendo and Tchimbélé power stations, and the drop in water levels in hydroelectric dams.
Furthermore, it indicated that its technical services are currently making commendable efforts to repair the defective machinery and that the floating power plant could soon be commissioned to strengthen domestic supply. SEEG is taking steps to prevent such errors from happening again by avoiding large-scale collapse of the interconnection network and implementing rotating load shedding to keep the network operational, the duration of which may vary depending on the real-time situation.
The situation, which had been disrupted since August 18 due to a computer link failure, has been resolved, SEEG said. “Customers can once again purchase EDAN devices directly at the agents or avail supplies through Airtel-money, Moov-money, Bicig-mobile and BGFI-mobile.” To make matters worse, SEEG, while apologizing to customers for the inconvenience caused, said that if the purchase of EDAN devices, which had been disrupted on all its procurement platforms, is thereafter restored to normal through mobile networks and agents, the operation will remain suspended at dealers until further notice.
Société d’Energie et d’Eau du Gabon also owes 22.9 million euros (about 15 billion CFA francs) to the British group Aggreko, which specializes in energy production and supplies nearly 30% of Greater Libreville’s electricity. Therefore, in order to put pressure on its partner to meet its debts, Aggreko suspended its services.
Last but not least, SEEG will pay all rights to Aggreko on Friday, hoping to bring calm and normal service restoration to users. But the situation remains fragile, as the company is in the ashes of a major fraud and computer hacking scandal. Last Friday, the transitional president, General Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, ordered an audit of SEEG.
