Here are Siyaad Barre’s opening remarks warning Somalia (his people) of their impending self-destruction and the accompanying dark clouds on the horizon. There is no doubt that Barre was a harsh dictator to his people. But after listening to the two-minute tape, who could say Barre wasn’t an ardent student of his people and their nature? Who could possibly question his description of the Somalis as a bunch of fools?Some twenty years later, his predictions have proven more real than mere warnings – the destruction of all state institutions, looting (bililiqo) on an unprecedented scale, and a country whose soul is orchestrated by its former enemy (Ethiopia). Whatever is left of Somalia today is nothing more than a country ruled by a soul. This tape says it all!The conclusion drawn from listening to the prediction tape is that the Somalis are undoubtedly good at destruction. The question remains, however, whether they are equally gifted at reorganizing and saving themselves from self-harm.
