The article was originally due to be published on April 14th, alongside coverage of the match, but was instead published the following day, the third anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster.
Some Liverpool fans reacted angrily to Souness’ interview with The Sun after the newspaper falsely claimed fans were to blame for the incident.

The former Liverpool manager has publicly expressed regret for not resigning after the 1992 FA Cup final
Despite numerous calls for him to resign or be sacked, Souness went against the advice of his doctors and continued to oversee Liverpool’s FA Cup final win over Sunderland.
After apologising, he continued to manage Liverpool until 1994, despite strained relations with the fans.
Souness admitted in “All I Know” that not resigning after the cup final was his biggest regret in life and he would “apologize for this decision until I die.”
