San Pedro de Macorís New Diary – Soles del Este ended a two-game losing streak by defeating Metros de Santiago 81-71 in a LNB Super League match held this Friday at the Rolando Ramírez Sports Center.

Jose Liriano had 14 points and seven rebounds for the Suns (2-5), while Luis Martinez Ogando added 13 points, nine rebounds and four assists. Manuel Guzman also scored 13 points, while Steven Vernplank added 11 points, including 3 of 5 from three-point range.

Emmitt Williams was the best player for the Mets (3-3) with 21 points and six rebounds. Jabari Rice scored 15 points and Luis Reynoso added eight. The setback snapped San Diego’s two-game winning streak.

With 3:37 left in the game, Tyler Cheese hit a layup to give the Suns a 75-69 lead. Then, with 1:37 left, Liriano grabbed an offensive rebound and scored at the basket to make it 77-71. The rest of the time, the winning team’s defense was tight and prevented any reaction from the losing team.

The Suns shot 48 percent, grabbed 46 rebounds and dished out 18 assists. The Mets shot 47 percent, but only grabbed 27 rebounds and dished out 11 assists.

The Suns had eight different players score in the first quarter as they took a 25-17 advantage, highlighted by Jordan Tolbert’s five points. Williams and Rice each had four points for the Mets.

With 6:00 left in the second quarter, Verplanken’s three-pointer gave the Suns a 35-25 lead. With 2:41 left, Brahiam Méndez blocked the ball and the Mets completed an 8-1 comeback to bring the score to 36-33. The Suns ended the first half with a 6-0 run and won 48-39.

Liriano and Guzman led the Sol with 11 points each at halftime. Darwin Cabrera scored 6. Williams and Rice each had 11 points for the Mets.

Sibanos was more aggressive in the third quarter, with Williams dunking and a 10-3 run that tied the score at 57-57 with 1:49 left. The Celtics scored five of the next seven points to lead 62-59 after three quarters.

The Suns finished with scores of 25-17, 23-22, 14-20 and 19-12.

This Saturday’s game

Starting at 8:00 pm, Leones de Santo Domingo will face Indios de San Francisco de Macorís at the San Carlos Club, while Reales de La Vega will face Cañeros del Este at the Eleoncio Mercedes Sports Center in La Romana.
