Liquid Technologies CEO says Zimbabwe’s internet speeds comparable to developed countries – Zimbabwe Post

Liquid Intelligent Technologies South Africa regional chief executive Wellington Makamure insists Zimbabwe’s internet speeds surpass those of several developed countries, including the United Kingdom.

Makamurai took aim at the prevailing negative perception of internet coverage, connectivity and speed in Zimbabwe, arguing that such misconceptions were holding back potential investors. “When it comes to fibre, we are the frontrunners. We beat London. First, I want you to do an internet speed test in Zimbabwe, then go to developed countries and do the same and compare,” Makamurai said, according to Business Times.

He stressed the importance of publicising Zimbabwe’s technological advancements to counteract negative external perceptions that could harm investment prospects. “If we don’t talk about it, the message from the outside world is negative and it affects our country and investments. It’s a sad reality. If you compare our capabilities and strengths with other countries in Africa and Europe in some cases, you’d be surprised.”

Makamure recounted his own experience on a recent trip to London, where he frequently experienced blackouts while travelling from London to Birmingham. “We cry so much when the network goes down here. It has happened elsewhere in the world as well, and because I was roaming, the signal went down on all five networks in England. I have the privilege of using all of them. I said I’ll get back to you when I can get online.”

Lorreta Songola, chief commercial officer for Central Africa at Liquid Intelligent Technologies, also spoke of the company’s resilience in the face of new competition, such as Starlink’s entry into Zimbabwe. Speaking to reporters, Songola said: “Competition is healthy after all, as it will be an opportunity for Zimbabweans to enjoy competitive services and prices offered by all players in the industry. We are already working with Starlink in other regional markets such as Zambia and we are all doing well.”

With over 80% market share of network capacity, Liquid Intelligent Technologies is the largest Internet access provider in Zimbabwe. The company operates in over 25 countries in Africa and is the largest independent network provider in the region and other emerging markets. Liquid’s fiber broadband network stretches over 110,000 km, of which over 26,000 km is in Zimbabwe.
