Libya’s Central Bank has resumed operations
On Sunday, August 18, 2024, the Central Bank of Libya announced the suspension of its operations after Musab Msallem was kidnapped by unidentified persons.
CBL immediately announced that it would not resume work until the employee was released and that authorities were hunting for those responsible for threatening its employees and others working in Libya’s banking sector.
Musab Msallem, who was kidnapped from the capital Tripoli, was the IT manager of CBL. French news agency AFP reported Musab’s kidnapping, which took place a week after CBL was besieged by armed men.
Musab’s kidnappers demanded the resignation of Sediq Kabir, the governor of the Central Bank of Libya in Tripoli.
Currently, the country is ruled by two governments, one based in Tripoli, which is recognized by the United Nations, and led by Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dbeibah, and the other based in the city of Benghazi and led by the Minister of Defense, Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar.
