For many years, our country has been talking about having a fifth-generation mobile network. This wish has become a reality from this moment, as Liberty today launched the first commercial 5G mobile network, available to all mobile users.

Johanna Escobar, General Manager, Liberty.

“Two years ago, when we launched our brand, we said we were ready to move to 5G. We decided that Costa Rica should not wait any longer and that the transition to fifth generation should begin, and we are working to make this new experience a reality right now.”

Johanna Escobar, General Manager, Liberty.

With this launch, the operator has also introduced four new postpaid plans to the market, which, in addition to access to the 5G network, will offer a larger data volume -GB-, unlimited applications such as YouTube, social networks, etc. as special discounts on 5G phones. Of course, all these benefits will also apply when customers subscribing to these plans browse the 4G LTE Pro network.

Liberty’s 5G network will initially focus on sites in metropolitan areas (GAMs) where mobile data traffic is highest, while improving the experience on the 4G LTE Pro network. Escobar recalled, “Just 10 years ago, when we launched our 4G network, we first deployed it in the GAMs and then quickly expanded coverage to the entire country. Currently, 4G-LTE Pro covers more than 90% of the country’s population; we will do the same thing, but faster with 5G.”

The managing director added that this new network will run on spectrum currently owned by Liberty and will be enhanced once the state government calls for tenders for available spectrum. “Let’s think of a new highway, today we have opened it and it will allow us to enjoy huge benefits like better speeds and better latency, once we have this spectrum we will be able to go on this 5G highway and create a giant highway with uneven steps and more lanes. But the first step, and the decisive step, is the one we are taking again today to be the pioneer in the country,” he commented.

Escobar insists that the highway is the first step in gradually realizing all the benefits that 5G will bring: smart cities, real-time telemedicine, connected cars, the Internet of Things, artificial BroadCast Unitedligence, and more.

In January of the same year, Liberty launched a test network operating in precisely this spectrum and put it out to tender. The first experimental phase was successful, allowing us to finalize the technical details of the launch announced today, including the qualification of the vast majority of smartphone brands for Liberty 5G, many of which support Android operating systems and IOS.
