The mayor of Liberia, José Javier Calvo Garcia, has made it clear that he will not allow the Liberia Municipal team to leave the state, as confirmed on Friday in different media outlets and by the team’s coach, Mino Diaz.

The mayor, however, did not mince words and assured that he would demand the resignation of the State Sports Council, led by President Elke Castillo and Vice President Hugo Ruiz.

The mayor said that since taking office last May, he has been trying to reconcile with both parties on the amount of fees the state committee wanted to levy, and even vetoed a new increase in rental charges for the stadium to the Liberia City Government.
“This rate increase has no support or technical justification to justify this disproportionate increase. We will not approve fee increases if they are not justified accordingly, and if necessary, I will veto them if they are not technically supported,” Calvo added.
The politician pointed out that at different meetings the state board reported that it had a surplus of 380 million pounds, so the reason for asking for an increase in the budget was unclear. In addition, people assured that they did not agree with the efforts of the state sports board.
“I want to invite the board of the Liberia Sports Commission to voluntarily decide to resign, retire and stop hurting the state. We have a responsibility to the state and we must be accountable to the state. It is clear that the state and the people of Liberia are not happy with the job they are doing,” Calvo stressed.
The political leader stressed that if no decision is made on Monday, he will seek the necessary legal means to resolve the issue, but he made it clear that the Liberian Municipal Government cannot leave the “White City.”
