Then the Paris Olympics began, while the cockfighting of the US presidential election faded slightly. That’s fine, because following Trump’s lead can hardly be considered human progress, but it will soon be considered to our liking in Iceland.
Someone has finally managed to point out to US President Biden that he is no longer capable of handling arguably the most powerful office in the world. No longer really in top form or in the national team category. Representing the Democratic Party will probably be Vice President Kamala Harris, but that certainly won’t leave most of us Icelanders confused about which candidate we’re voting for, but it probably won’t be like Kanan. As of this writing, it’s said that 49% will vote for Trump and 47% will vote for Harris. Of course, that’s not to say that 49% of voters are asses, but it’s to say that about half of Americans are unhappy with the people in power, which is nothing to sneeze at.
There are such competitions at the Olympics, too. What a spectacle! A bowl of drama, joy, tears and beauty brought to us by many of the world’s greatest athletes. Sadly, we Icelanders will not have many opponents this time and our hopes of a medal are slim. But at the Olympics, the most important thing is to be included – and that’s what it is.
The Olympic Games have left us, the spectators, with many beautiful and fond memories that we will never forget. However, politics have long colored their history with darker colors that, unfortunately, also live in memory.
The first and perhaps greatest winner of the Paris Olympics, after the first three days, was the unspoiled singer Celine Dion He mesmerized the rest of the world with a truly stunning performance of an ode to love. How about taking a break from politics for a bit and embracing the beauty of the Olympics and human life?
