Lemuel Cruz Cruz, accused of murdering Alexandra Cardona Torrado, was found guilty today, Monday, in the Caguas Court.
Puerto Rico Attorney General Domingo Emanueli Hernández expressed satisfaction after Cruz was convicted for the murder of Cardona Torrado.
Emanueli Hernandez stressed that the Ministry of Justice has exhausted all legal resources to ensure a conviction beyond a reasonable doubt in this case.
“Some cases present more challenges than others and may take longer to process, but the Puerto Rico Department of Justice will not rest until all actions consistent with the law are taken to provide justice for the victims. The outcome in this case is a testament to that,” Emanueli Hernandez said in a written statement.
The Secretary highlighted the commitment and dedication of the prosecutors prosecuting the case, who even managed to locate and arrest a key witness who was off-island, thereby ensuring her appearance at trial.
Chief of Public Prosecutors Jessika Correa González expressed satisfaction with the guilty verdict of Lemuel Cruz Cruz for first-degree murder and other crimes.
“We recognize the excellent work of prosecutors Gabriel Redondo Miranda, Lisa Delgado Gonzalez and Ramon Ayende Sánchez,” Correa Gonzalez added in a written statement.
Sentencing is scheduled for Friday, September 27, 2024 at 10:00 a.m.
Alexandra Cardona Torrado was murdered in Arecibo in June 2020 while helping her friend Rivera Andújar hide from defendant Lemuel Cruz Cruz, who later married Rivera Andújar.
In June 2023, Judge Evelyn Reyes found cause to hold Cruz Cruz to trial and admitted a key recording into evidence.
In April, Judge Joie-Lin Lao Meléndez ordered Rivera Andújar jailed for refusing to testify at his trial, saying he was exercising his right not to answer questions.
