Chiles was awarded bronze after the U.S. support body protested, ultimately improving her score. Romania’s Barbossu ended up crying on the floor of the Olympic Stadium in Paris.
“I can’t believe we would affect the mental health and emotions of our athletes in this way… We would rather protect them,” the legendary Comaneci wrote on X.
She is a nine-time Olympic champion and one of the greatest stars in gymnastics history.
At first, Babosu thought she had won a medal in Monday’s free standing practice final. Chiles was her last competitor, and the American girl’s first result put her in fourth place.
The Romanian girls held up their country’s flag and began celebrating their medals. Then the drama began.
Soon after, it was announced that the Chilean coach had asked the judges to review the difficulty score used for her jump. The conclusion was that it was too low.

That boosted Chile’s score to 13.766, just ahead of Babosu’s 13.700.
When the revised results appeared on the screen, the 18-year-old Babosu looked up and stood still. Then she left the venue in tears, obviously completely broken.
– We had nothing to lose at that point, so I thought “we have to give it a try,” U.S. coach Cecil Landy said of the protest.
– Honestly, I didn’t think anything would change, but when I heard her scream, I turned around and said “What?”, Randy added.
