Will the load relay continue to operate on Monday night?
The vice president for government and public affairs of the General Directorate of Public Relations, Iván Báez, assured on Monday that he could not predict if the country would face another round of load shifting tonight, which could put several towns on the island in trouble.
In an interview with the “Tell Me the Truth” program on 1320 AM radio station, Báez explained that Aguirre Central (Salinas) Unit 1 has been operating since Sunday. However, Unit 2 may take a week and a half to be operational due to damage to the feed pump motor.
As for Costa Sur (Guayanilla) Unit 6, he said it should be operational by Thursday. San Juan Central Station Unit 6 also failed last week, but “we don’t have an estimated date for repair.”
“There was no load relaying yesterday. It’s too early to say they (LUMA Energy) will do load relaying today. It’s more of a communication with them in the afternoon and we’ll let them know what the generation capacity is and they (will determine) based on that capacity or the lack thereof,” explained GE’s vice president of government and public relations.
On Saturday, LUMA Energy reported that they would be carrying out load shedding overnight, advising citizens to reduce energy consumption in their homes to reduce the scale of service disruptions, and shared their website “Home Energy Saving Tips”.
“Important update. Due to high energy consumption and limitations on available generation capacity at @Genera_PR, there is a high probability of load shedding tonight. Reducing consumption helps reduce outages due to insufficient generation capacity!” the coalition wrote via its X account (formerly Twitter).
