South Korean media quoted the Financial Supervisory Service as saying that Kakao Pay transferred user credit information to Alipay in order to enter Apple’s App Store and provide payment services. Since Apple requires companies to provide customer-related information, Kakao Pay therefore cooperated with Alipay.

Kakao Pay said that the personal credit information provided by the company to Alipay is a business entrustment contract between the two parties. According to the relevant provisions of the “Credit Information Utilization and Protection Law”, there is no need to seek the user’s consent. The company emphasized that the cooperation with Alipay has nothing to do with shares.

Kakao Pay has 40 million registered users in South Korea and about 24.7 million monthly active users (MAU). It is not clear how much personal credit information it has provided to Alipay.

The report pointed out that Ant Group is the second largest shareholder of Kakao Pay, holding 43.9% of the shares.
