French presidential envoy to Lebanon Jean-Yves Le Drian met separately with Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri and Hezbollah MP Mohammed Raad on Wednesday on the second day of his visit to Lebanon.

Berri reiterated his commitment to the presidential election initiative, calling for a split-round vote in parliament on multiple candidate lists before unconditional consultations, al-Jadeed TV reported.

Le Drian met on Tuesday with caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati, Marada Movement leader Souleymane Franguia and former Progressive Socialist Party leader Walid Jumblatt.

Media reports said that despite Le Drian’s visit to Syria, political forces believe that a domestic solution is unlikely to be found in the short term due to the complex situation in the region.

A source familiar with the meeting between Mikati and Le Drian told L’Noticias that the French envoy did not discuss an invitation to France for talks.

Al-Joumhouria newspaper cited a source familiar with the matter as saying that Le Drian’s visit was “exploratory and quick”, noting that he did not bring any new proposals.
