Launch of national seminar on the place of women in transition

Minister of the Status of Women Marie-Françoise Suzan and President of the Presidential Commission Edgar Le Blanc-Firs stressed the importance of women’s involvement in the fight against gender-based violence.

The Government, through the Minister of the Status of Women and Women’s Rights, Marie Françoise Suzan, officially launched this Tuesday (27 August) a national seminar on the status of women in transition. The ceremony brought together key figures, including the President of the Presidential Transition Council, Edgard Le Blanc Fils, the Prime Minister Gary Cornely and members of their Governments, international partners and the United Nations Resident Coordinator, members of Governments and representatives of women’s organizations.

In his opening remarks, the President of the Transitional Presidential Council, Edgard Le Blanc Fils, stressed the fundamental role played by the State in the liberation of women and the need to provide them with the means to effectively combat gender-based violence. He recalled that women make up a large part of the Haitian population and that they have a vital potential for the development of the country.

The Presidential Advisor also spoke about the need to combat gender-based violence and affirmed that concrete actions in favour of gender equality would benefit not only women but Haitian society as a whole. The event aimed to create a space for dialogue where state and non-state actors could share their perspectives on the place of women and girls in the ongoing transformation.

The national event was organized with the aim of creating a dialogue space for state and non-state actors to express their understanding of the position of women and girls in the transition period and to propose realistic actions in terms of coordinated interventions that would help the MCFDF implement its roadmap to achieve the goals related to the five main axes or projects of the transition.

For the existing team, the workshop represented an important step in mobilizing various stakeholders around the five axes of transformation by promoting an inclusive and collaborative approach.

The event highlights the commitment of the Haitian Government and its partners to promote women’s rights and guarantee their active participation in all decision-making processes in order to build a more equitable and secure future for all.
