Enrique Ralim, a member of the New Democracy Party and former member of the Popular Liberation Party, who is also a Surinamese civil servant, hopes to interest young people in the Commewijne region in choosing agriculture and entrepreneurship over government jobs.
At a meeting of the National Democratic Party (NDP) structures in Commewijne on Friday evening, the Surinamese politician pointed out that it makes no sense for everyone to always apply for jobs in the “lanti” because this would make the government hydrocephalic.
“Some people will say, ‘You have nothing in your head. That’s it’. So let’s start producing. Let’s move towards entrepreneurship so that we can also provide jobs for others,” the politician stressed.
A bunch of vegetable varieties such as peppers, antroewas, cucumbers and sopropos were placed, and a tjap was handed to NDP chairperson Jenny Simons, showing the region’s agricultural potential. Lalim said the lad is also a symbol of how to tackle corruption.
“When people sometimes think that … there is a system in itself … that they participate in corruption … then we are done. People should not behave like cancerous weeds. We will root them out,” the NDP member said.
Lallim said it was a sign that Commerwijne should be turned into a manufacturing district again.
“It’s a sign that we want to return Commewijne to a production area. We want to stimulate production policy, especially in Commewijne. We are in the lion’s den because they are engaged in agriculture in Alkmaar. We want to encourage this among young people. Because if we produce, more money will come in, the exchange rate will be stable and the economy can develop further,” said Lalim.
