The passenger ferry service between Nagapattinam, India, and Kanksanthurai (KKS) near Jaffna in Sri Lanka’s northern province, which was due to start in October 2023, resumed today (August 16).

The Indian High Commission in Colombo said in a press release that the ferry ‘Sivagangai’ operated by private operator IndSri Ferry Services completed the maiden voyage between Nagapattinam and KKS in about four hours with around 50 passengers on board.

The Consul General of India in Jaffna welcomed the passengers at the KKS port.

This marks a broader effort by India and Sri Lanka to enhance maritime connectivity.

The press release further stated that in order to make the services affordable for passengers, the Indian government has decided to provide financial assistance of more than 25 million Sri Lankan rupees per month for one year to meet the associated charges and operating costs of the Nagapattinam Port. Similarly, the Sri Lankan government has also reduced the current departure tax levied on passengers leaving Sri Lanka by passenger ships and boats.

Future plans include exploring additional routes and services to further expand connectivity and economic cooperation.
