TOBA, North Sumatra (ANTARA) – Indonesia has hosted another international-level sporting event, the 2023 Jet Ski World Championship, which will be held from November 22 to 26 in the Lake Toba area of North Sumatra.
Other international-level sporting events to be held in Indonesia in 2023 include the U-17 FIFA World Cup, Rally Championship, Badminton Championship, and more.
This year marks the first time that Indonesia has held a jet ski championship, which is organized by organizer H20 Racing in cooperation with the government.
For H20 Racing, Lake Toba presents a new challenge for the championship. Nevertheless, the scenery of Lake Toba is still spectacular, something never seen before in jet ski events held in various countries.
Raimondo Di San Germano, marketing director of H20 Racing, pointed out that Lake Toba is located at an altitude of about 900 meters and the water has different salinity levels, which is a challenge for the 94 drivers participating in the championship.
Lake Toba’s altitude affects engine performance, as the engines have to work harder due to lower oxygen levels at altitude, so each team’s technicians have to work hard to find the best settings for their jet ski engines.
In addition, Lake Toba was formed after a supervolcanic eruption 74,000 years ago, which affected the salinity of the lake water. According to Germano’s explanation, several riders said that they felt more violent water flow impact in Lake Toba.
However, Germano pointed out that this was not a complaint but a reaction from the riders to the new experience while competing in Lake Toba. In addition, Lake Toba’s unique geographical location also presents challenges for the riders and their teams that they must overcome to win the title of the competition held in four districts in the Lake Toba region.
The competition is divided into two main categories: Endurance and Grand Prix.
The endurance race took the longest time as it was held at three different venues, namely Sinalsal Beach in Karo District on November 22, Tao Silalahi Beach in Dairi District on November 23 and Pangururan Seaside Town in Samosir District on November 24.
The base camp of the 22 riders is all in Pangurulan, a coastal city on Samosir Island, so they have to cross Lake Toba every day to the two venues of Karo and Dairi.
It takes 60 minutes to travel from the coastal city of Samosir to Carlow and Daly, a distance of 30 kilometers, which is also one of the assessment aspects for determining the champion.
Once at the competition venue, the riders will compete in two events as their main evaluation.
Three days into the endurance race, French rider Jean Bruno Pastorello won the championship, consolidating his dominance in the endurance race.
Pastorello accumulated 154 points in three games with Carlo, Daly and Samosir.
He won the Caro and Daly endurance races on two consecutive days, and Bruno only lost in the Samosir endurance race.
He assessed that the result of the race in Lake Toba was a bit unexpected because the conditions there were different from those in Europe. He needed to survive in unaccustomed conditions.
The hot sun, the cool breeze and the re-tuned engine were all challenges for him, but the fierce competition also made him more motivated and he didn’t want to return empty-handed.
After the endurance race, the championship’s main event, the 2023 Lake Toba Grand Prix, takes place on November 25-26.
The seven events of the Grand Prix are Women’s Slalom GP1, Slalom Division GP1, Slalom Speedboat GP1, Skiing Women’s GP1, Skiing Division GP1, Freestyle Skiing and Speedboat GP1.
The drivers competed for 14 titles, 7 of which were won in Grand Prix racing, the rest being world titles won at the end of this year’s season.
Another French rider, Francois Medori, is among the riders who could take the world title at the 2023 Lake Toba Jet Ski World Championship.
Medori is extremely proud to have won the Runabout GP1 World Championship, as he only finished second in the previous edition last year.
He has fond memories of Lake Toba as it was his first visit to Indonesia and his first appearance as a world champion after three years of hard work.
He made his Runabout GP1 debut in 2021 and has been showing positive growth since then.
Medori dedicated his world title to his child, who was born on November 16, 2023. He was unable to spend more time with his son because he had to leave for Indonesia three days after his birth.
He expressed his hope to visit Indonesia with his children during next year’s water bike event to see the beauty of Lake Toba firsthand while trying to retain his title.
