The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has declared Tuesday, August 20, 2024, a work-free day to celebrate Isese Day this year.

The proclamation was contained in a circular titled “Proclamation in commemoration of Isese Day 2024 – Work Freedom Day”, issued on Monday by the State Chief of Service, Bode Agoro.

The announcement stated that the festival was established to demonstrate the Sanwo-Olu group’s commitment to supporting traditional institutions and strengthening the protection of cultural heritage.

However, the government has directed civil servants to resume work by 8 am on Wednesday, August 21, 2024.

The notice reads: “Please be informed that this year’s Ise-Shima Day celebration will be held on Tuesday, August 20, 2024.

“In an effort to emphasise the need to extend necessary support to traditional institutions and enhance the promotion of indigenous traditions through the preservation of cultural heritage, Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu has approved the declaration of Tuesday, August 20, 2024 as a work-free day for civil servants in the state.

“Accordingly, work will resume on Wednesday, August 21, 2024 at 8:00 a.m.

“Accordingly, all accounting practitioners are requested to take note of the contents of this circular and give it due wide publicity.”

This is the first time that the Lagos State Government has declared a public holiday to celebrate Isese Day, following the United Nations’ declaration of August 20 as the World Traditional Religions Day.
