The streets of the Rose Lake Artisan Village have undergone some changes. Despite the challenges during the past rainy seasons that caused shops to close, the site has managed to retain all its charm. Today, strolling through the aisles, you will find canteens filled with works of art that are symbols of Senegal and Africa.
“Many people are curious about Lake Rose, its pink water and its almost unique phenomenon of salt production. This is what attracts tourists. Lake Rose is an important asset in promoting Senegal as a tourist destination,” declared Mor Guèye, chairman of the Lake Rose Artisanal Village.
Despite the economic benefits of tourism, Rose Lake lacks government support. At the start of the next tourist season, the artisan village hopes to gain new momentum with a boost promised by the authorities.
“There are more than 500 artisans making a living here, but most have no permanent place to live. Without stability, tourism cannot thrive. In terms of security, the presence of tourist police is guaranteed. But the environment and development need to improve, as Rose Lake needs to be reassessed. The past few years have been very difficult and we hope that the country’s new government will rise to this challenge.
Meanwhile, the artisan village of Rose Lake is preparing to welcome visitors who will bring this unique place back to life.
