Venezuela beat Mexico 1-0
June 27, 2024 – Mexico had plenty of chances on Wednesday night, but the breakthrough never came. Venezuela, currently ranked 44th in FIFA’s rankings, defeated a team ranked 15th and won 1-0 in front of a crowd that strongly supports Mexico, YahooDeportes.com reported.
For the second consecutive game in the Copa America 2024 at the Estadio Sofi, the “home team” failed to get a good result. On Monday, Brazil drew 0-0 with Costa Rica in front of thousands of yellow-shirted players in the stands, but failed to score. On Wednesday, Mexico was defeated by Venezuela in a largely home game, with Mexican fans filling the stadium and then leaving in disappointment.
Mexican Julian Quinones will be the scapegoat, as it was his mistake that led to Venezuela’s penalty. The referee had no hesitation in awarding the penalty after Quinones made an ugly challenge on Venezuela’s Jon Aramburu in the penalty area. Venezuelan Salomón Rondón of Pachuca in the Mexican Football League took the penalty and turned the game around.
El Tri opened their tournament campaign with a bittersweet win over Jamaica at NRG Stadium in Houston on Saturday night. Mexico won 1-0 thanks to a 69th-minute goal from Gerardo Arteaga, but Edson Alvarez was sidelined with an injury in his first game wearing the captain’s armband. Alvarez confirmed via social media on Tuesday that his tournament run was over and that the West Ham United star would focus on rehabbing his injured leg.
Venezuela faced no such obstacles in their first match of the tournament against Ecuador. La Vinotinto pulled out a surprising 2-1 win after Ecuador captain Enner Valencia was sent off for a dangerous tackle on Philadelphia Union’s Jose Martinez in the penalty area. Down by a man, Ecuador conceded two goals in the second half.
With Wednesday’s win, Venezuela tops Group B with six points and will advance to the quarterfinals after Sunday’s match against Jamaica. Ecuador beat Jamaica 3-1 in its first match on Wednesday and is second in the group with three points. Mexico needs to beat Ecuador on Sunday to finish second and advance to the quarterfinals.
