Kira Municipality MP Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda has openly criticised President Yoweri Museveni’s decision to appoint Eddy Kenzo as presidential adviser.
Semuju believes that such appointments undermine the prestige and seriousness of the advisory role.
Ssemujju contrasted Kenzo with the first generation of presidential advisers, which included such well-respected figures as Professor George Kanyeihamba, General David Sejusa and Ephraim Kamuntu.
Ssemujju said the men were appointed based on their wealth of knowledge, experience and contribution to the country, qualities he felt Kenzo lacked in advising the president.
If you look at the quality of the first batch of people appointed as presidential advisers, like Professor George Kanyehamba, General David Sejusa and Ephraim Kamuntu…When you start appointing people, including those without knowledge and experience, and promote them as your advisers, you will see that the position is debased.
While acknowledging Kenzo’s talent and success in the music industry, Ssemujju also expressed doubts on whether the artist can contribute meaningfully to the president in an advisory capacity. “I like Kenzo as a singer and he has value, but I don’t think his value lies in advising the president,” he added.
In recent years, President Museveni has appointed an increasing number of advisers from the arts and entertainment industries, possibly in an effort to attract younger voters.
Besides Eddy Kenzo, other well-known figures in the music industry such as Catherine Kusasira, Mark Bugembe (stage name Buchaman) and Jennifer Nakanguubi (stage name Full Figure) were also appointed as presidential advisers.
