South Sudanese President Salva Kiir has made a minor reshuffle of his unity government, removing the governor of Northern Bahr el Ghazal state and the country’s minister of trade and industry.

President Kiir issued a presidential decree on Monday evening, dismissing the Governor of Northern Bahr el Ghazal State, Tun Akon Ngor, and appointing Uber Ajunga Mawut as the State Governor.

The president also dismissed the country’s Minister of Trade and Industry, William Anyuon Kuol, and appointed Ambassador Joseph Moum Majak as his replacement. Mr Moum previously served as South Sudan’s ambassador to Egypt.

The dismissed officials were nominated by Kiir’s Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM).

South Sudan’s leaders did not give a reason for the change, citing only constitutional presidential powers and provisions of a 2018 peace deal.

However, the trade minister was recently heavily criticised in parliament for seizing South Sudanese fish in neighbouring Uganda.

Two weeks ago, Kuol accused Ugandan authorities of seizing South Sudanese fish because it did not meet export regulations, but South Sudanese fish traders disputed the claim.

The fish were unloaded in Uganda en route to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), leaving traders stranded, fearing for their safety and their perishable cargo.
