South Sudanese President Salva Kiir has left for Kigali, Rwanda, to attend the inauguration ceremony of South Sudanese President Paul Kagame.
President Kagame won the East African country’s general election last month.
Kiir was seen off at Juba airport by First Vice President Riek Machar, Cabinet ministers and senior government officials.
On Sunday, President Kiir, the East African Community chairperson, will join other world leaders at President Kagame’s inauguration ceremony to celebrate his fourth term in office.
Lily Adieu Martin, the president’s press secretary, said Kiir is expected to attend important events in the region. She said the two leaders will also hold bilateral talks to discuss regional peace and stability.
Lily pointed out that the visit highlighted the importance of regional cooperation in addressing common challenges and advancing common goals in the East African Community.
President Paul Kagame will be sworn in on Sunday in a ceremony that will be a grand celebration of his enduring leadership.
The event, which will be held at the Amahoro Stadium, is expected to attract more than 40,000 spectators, including more than 23 heads of state from across the continent.
The inauguration ceremony will be marked by a grand military parade showcasing Rwanda’s well-trained military.
In addition to the military displays, traditional dance performances will highlight Rwanda’s rich cultural heritage and add a vibrant and festive atmosphere to the event.
President Kagame, 66, has been in power in Rwanda since 2000 and has led the country through a period of extraordinary change.
