South Sudanese President Salva Kiir was among the guests who attended the official launch of former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s candidacy for the chairmanship of the African Union Commission (AUC) on Tuesday.
The launch at the Presidential Palace in Nairobi on Tuesday marked a major endorsement of the Raila project by the East African nation.
Others in attendance included Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni and Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu. Burundi was represented by Prime Minister Gervais Ndirakobuka and Rwanda by former Defense Minister James Kabarebe.
Each leader expressed strong support for Odinga, highlighting his pan-African credentials and commitment to regional and continental progress.
President Kiir praised Odinga’s dedication to Africa’s prosperity and called on the region to support his candidacy.
“I am here today to confirm that South Sudan has endorsed this decision. I have known His Excellency Raila Odiga for many years and his pan-African commitment and perseverance are admirable, and his passion and pan-African prosperity are of great significance to the African Union,” Kiir said.
President Suluhu spoke highly of Odinga’s contribution to the goals of the AU and stressed the need for institutional reform within the AU. Ndirakobuka stressed the historical ties between Burundi and Kenya and expressed confidence in Odinga’s qualifications.
Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo and President Museveni also expressed support, citing Odinga’s leadership and his broader impact on Africa’s future.
