July 11, 2024 (Khartoum) – Khartoum State authorities on Thursday issued a two-week deadline for foreigners to leave the state, which has seen almost daily clashes since the outbreak of the war.
The government’s suspicion of foreigners has increased since personnel from Ethiopia, South Sudan, Chad, Mali and Niger joined the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and took part in fighting against government forces, especially sniping and artillery operations.
Social media pages aligned with the military often share videos of foreigners captured during clashes with the RSF.
Colonel Nizar Khalil, director of the Khartoum State Foreigners and Immigration Control Department, asked all foreigners to “leave Khartoum state within 15 days during the war to ensure the safety of their lives.”
He said the decision was taken based on instructions from the National Security Coordination Committee in Khartoum.
The army controls the Karari area and some neighborhoods in Old Omdurman, while Khartoum and Khartoum Bahri are controlled by the Rapid Security Forces, with the exception of the armed forces’ headquarters and bases.
On July 8, Sudan’s northern Nile state detained more than 150 foreigners for not having official residence documents as part of the country’s foreigner control operation launched in the eastern Gedaref state.
Before the war broke out on April 15, 2023, Sudan hosted more than one million refugees, most of whom lived in cities. The country is also a transit point for illegal immigrants from West African countries heading to Europe.
