White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said today that the Cairo negotiations aimed at reaching an agreement on a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and the release of Hamas hostages will continue, clarifying that the talks will address specific issues at the working group level in the coming days.
Kerby did not believe the talks had broken down, instead claiming the negotiations were “constructive.”
“Progress has been made and it is felt that the next logical step is to continue the negotiations at the working group level, where the working groups will work out the details of certain issues on their own,” a White House spokesman told reporters.
Kerby said Brett McGurk, the White House Middle East envoy involved in the negotiations, would leave Cairo soon and there was only one day left in the talks between the working groups.
As he stressed, one of the issues that the working group must address is the details of the gradual exchange of Hamas hostages with Palestinians held in Israeli prisons.
The latest round of talks took place under the shadow of the threat of widespread conflict in the Middle East. Over the weekend, Hezbollah fired hundreds of rockets and drones at Israel, while the Israeli military launched airstrikes into Lebanon to prevent a larger attack. But Kerby insisted that the hostilities between the Israeli army and Hezbollah militants had not had an impact on the Cairo talks.
