A Kenyan truck driver has been killed in Kuebet county in South Sudan’s Lakes state, officials said.
On Saturday, an unidentified gunman reportedly forced the driver to turn the truck into nearby bushes and shot him dead inside the vehicle.
Lake State police spokesman Maj Elijah Mabor Makuac told Radio Tamazuj on Monday that police were investigating the matter. He identified the driver as Elijah Waidupi.
He said the incident took place around 8 pm on Sunday at a place called Ajok in Abiriupayam.
Makuake said the bodies were first taken to Rumbek and then transferred to Juba on Sunday.
Daniel Laat Kon, a civil society activist in Lakes State, said the incident marked a recurrence of road ambushes and urged the state government to ensure those responsible were brought to justice.
Kon said arresting and prosecuting the criminals would serve as a warning to other potential criminals.
“If this phenomenon starts today and continues tomorrow, it could lead to conflict and fear again.
“The road from Bahr el Ghazal to Equatoria has always been safe and people are happy to use it without fear,” he said.
