Considering the shortage of Keeri Samba rice in the country, the Minister of Agriculture and Plantation Industries, Mr. Mahinda Amaraweera, suggested that the Rice Marketing Board implement the Keeri Samba rice cultivation project in Hambantota district
Therefore, the Rice Marketing Board has started a Keeri Samba rice seed cultivation project in Hambantota district with a 500-acre planting area using the financial allocation from the Yalaji Farmers Trust Fund this year. Although the original plan was to cultivate 1,000 acres of Keeri Samba, the planting project had to be reduced to 500 acres due to difficulties in finding Keeri Samba rice seeds.
The Paddt Marketing Committee provided rice seeds and other inputs required for growing Keeri Samba to 310 farmers.
Before this, keeri samba cultivation was not popular in Hambantota district, but now a large number of farmers are engaged in keeri samba cultivation.
Yesterday (12) afternoon, Agriculture and Plantation Industries Minister Mahinda Amaraweera inspected the launch of the Keeri Samba Planting Project by the Rice Marketing Board in Aluthwewa area of Anguna Kola Perasa.
The chairman of the Rice Marketing Board, Mr. Buddhaka Iddamalgoda, said that the harvesting of the plantation is scheduled to take place next week and the entire harvest is planned to be purchased by the Rice Marketing Board. The harvest of Keeri Samba is planned to be distributed to farmers in the form of seed rice
Meanwhile, Agriculture and Plantation Industries Minister Mahinda Amaraweera yesterday (12th) instructed the chairman of the Rice Marketing Board to arrange for the cultivation of 2,000 acres of keeri samba in the Hambantota district in the upcoming rice season.
