Furthermore, commenting on the remarks of the occupied territories’ “Minister of Transport” Erhan Arikli regarding the “arrest of Greek Cypriots who possess Turkish Cypriot property in any way” in the free areas, the speaker noted that usurpation constitutes the acquisition and/or appropriation of property from non-legal owners in an illegal manner.
Mr. Letinpiotis stated that the law on Turkish Cypriot property determines the management of Turkish Cypriot property, while the lawlessness in the country continues due to the illegal invasion and ongoing occupation.
“According to official data from the Land Registry of the Republic of Cyprus, Greek Cypriots have owned about 78 percent of private land in the area currently occupied by Turkish troops since 1964,” he said.
He further stated that the Turkish occupation forces still prevent those displaced by the Turkish invasion from returning to their properties and enjoying them peacefully, which is in violation of human rights conventions and international and domestic laws.
“The Republic of Cyprus protects the right to property, contrary to the actions of the occupation regime, which aims to Turkify the occupied areas and create a fait accompli on the territory, which violates international human rights law and complicates efforts to resolve the Cyprus problem,” he stressed.
Mr. Letinpiotis sent a message to our Turkish compatriots, “We remain committed to the immediate resumption of negotiations and a final settlement of the Cyprus problem”.
