The prosecutor of the Kankan Court of First Instance presented the accused bandits and their alleged accomplices to the press on Tuesday, July 9, 2024. According to a Guineematin.com correspondent in the county, the Kankan local gendarmerie company served as the framework for the event in the presence of several military officials.

The bandits were allegedly the perpetrators of an armed attack in front of Julius Nyerere University in Kankan on June 30. The charges against them are serious: criminal association, armed robbery, receiving stolen property and conspiracy.

Alpha Boiro, Commander of the Cancan Gendarmerie Research Brigade

Commander Alpha Boyero explained the circumstances that led to their arrest. “As part of the fight against insecurity in the Kankan region, the Defense and Security Forces carried out a series of operations to track down the last strongholds of criminals. On June 30, 2024, at around 9 pm, armed bandits attacked a phone shop in the Korialen district. The Defense and Security Forces were immediately alerted and at 11 pm seized the phone charger cable of Souleymane DOUMBOUYA alias Gébenko. The latter’s statement allowed us to arrest Mr. Soumaïla KEITA alias Original and Mohamed TRAORE alias Z-mao on July 3 and 4, 2024, respectively. Following the statement, a search was carried out at the home of Ms. Mamadama CAMARA Sinkéfara, a friend of Kerfala BANGOURA alias Kapo, currently on the run and one of the masterminds of the attack. During this search, the following items were found: a PMAK 47 war weapon, two (2) 40 (40) rounds of ammunition, a Juve brand motorcycle, red color, phone charger cables, all from the aforementioned store. Our relentless investigations led to the arrest of the individual, Mamadama CAMARA, at around 1pm on Saturday, July 6, 2024, in the Sinkhfra district, as she was preparing to join her friend, Kerfalla BANGOURA alias Kapo. The four are suspected of participating in a criminal gang, armed robbery, receiving stolen property, conspiracy. After the presentation, they will be transferred to the Court of First Instance for further investigations,” explained Commander Alpha Boyero.

Marwane Baldé, Public Prosecutor, Court of First Instance, Cancan

Marwane Baldé, prosecutor of the Kankan Court of First Instance, sent a strong message to the population and the authorities. “I take this opportunity to congratulate the Kankan Defense and Security Forces for their vigilance and patriotism. I also want to thank the Criminal Research Unit of Kankan. This dynamic has been going on for a long time and it is a matter of eradicating crime in the Kankan judicial field. We will spare no effort in the fight against serious crime. I would like to point out that the people of Kankan have shown resilience and have overcome the painful difficulties that our citizens have experienced in the past few months with the multiple armed attacks. This is thanks to the government’s policy of cooperation with the defense and security forces of the region. The Prosecution is satisfied with the defense and security forces of Kankan and calls on the population of Kankan, as well as the transitional government, to reiterate this effort. We appreciate the efforts and resources injected into the Kankan region, and we also thank the people of Kankan for participating in the fight against crime in their jurisdiction,” said the prosecutor.

In addition, Mr. Balde provided details on the rest of the process. “We will receive this report very soon and we will immediately open a judicial investigation to deepen the investigation and respect the rights of these suspects and those arrested. They are Guinean citizens, the law has no color, the law is fair, the law is harsh, but this is the law. It is not because they were arrested today that they are convicted, they have the right to a fair and impartial trial. They also have the right to defend themselves. That is why we will immediately receive this report from the research team to guide this process and continue to fight crime,” the prosecutor advised.
