For some time, tensions have been high between the Grand Imam of Kankan, El Hadj Karamo Bangali Kaba, and the scholar El Hadj Cheik Suleiman Sidibé. A government delegation tried to bring the two camps together. According to a Guineematin.com correspondent in the region, the two camps have decided to bury the hatchet and start anew on a new base.
The tension between the Grand Imam of Kankan and the scholar El Hadj Cheik Suleimane Sidibé has now subsided. At the end of the meeting held on Tuesday, July 9, 2024 in Villa Syli, both parties expressed their respective concerns and found common ground.
The reconciliation was the work of a ministerial delegation from Conakry that attended the funeral of the father of Regional Planning Minister Maury Conte. Its goal is to create a climate of peace and religious harmony in the region after Karamo Solo repeatedly launched vicious attacks in the media against Muslim religious leaders in Kankan.
In his speech, the Minister of Territorial Administration and Decentralization, Ibrahima Khalil Conde, gave details of the meeting that led to the reconciliation of these religious figures.

“God helped us in accordance with the instructions of the authorities, the President of the Republic, the Head of State, the Supreme Commander of the Army, Mamadi Doumbouya, who instructed us to take the necessary measures to reconcile the parents. This reconciliation happened. Regarding the reconciliation, we told the son (Karamo Solo, editor’s note) that the Grand Imam is his father and he also acknowledges that he is his father, just with a disagreement. We also asked those who were close to the two Hajis to stop creating tension between the sons of the country, especially between these two religious figures, who understand us. Each of them restored the best feelings. This is to tell the residents of Nabaya that there is no longer tension in Kankan. This opportunity allowed us to defuse the crisis. For the supporters of Karamo Solo, for the supporters of the Grand Imam, we tell you that the Grand Imam is the regional inspector of religious affairs and he deserves all the honors, and his son Karamo Solo also recognizes this. The regional religious affairs inspection is there, the municipal administration is there, the coordinator of the Islamic Association is there. So, everything is going well,” he said.
In his speech, Kankan Grand Imam, Elhadj Karamo Bangaly Kaba, the regional inspector of religious affairs, expressed support for the reconciliation.

“Wanting to revisit everything that happened could create other problems. So we decided to forgive together, to put out the fire. There will be no progress if there is no agreement in one country or one place. We are religious leaders. Karamo Solo is a man with a faithful Muslim world; therefore, if there are differences between us, it is not a good thing. Teeth are born to protect the tongue, but sometimes these teeth also hurt the tongue that they are supposed to protect. This is a moment of disagreement, but God has decided today that this will all end with the help of the President of the Republic, ”he advised.
Elhadj Cheick Souleymane Sidibé, president of the Noureddine Islamic Association, had the same experience.

“The wise men of Kankan established a harmony that continues to rule the city, and the great imam lives in the shadow of this beautiful harmony established by our predecessors. That is why sometimes things go bad, but always end in appeasement and mutual understanding. Today, the first imam has a feeling of mercy towards me, and I feel the same. So, everything is back to normal,” he advised.
