WashingtonKamala Harris’ campaign announced it had raised $310 million in July, double what Donald Trump raised, a surge driven in large part by the vice president’s bid to replace Joe Biden as the Democratic nominee for November’s election.

The amount includes $200 million raised by new candidates in less than a week after Biden dropped out on July 21, and Biden’s donors have given up hope.

Harris “raised $310 million in July, a record for any candidate in the 2024 election,” her team announced in a press release.

He said the figure was “driven by the best month for small donor fundraising in U.S. presidential election history” and was “more than double” what the Trump campaign raised that month.

The Republican nominee’s team announced in a statement Thursday that it had raised $138.7 million in July, a huge sum for a month in which Trump survived an assassination attempt and was endorsed for victory at the Republican National Convention.

The huge sums of money spent by US presidential campaigns are mainly spent on very expensive videos promoting the candidates’ promises.

Open Secrets, a nongovernmental organization specializing in political financing, estimates that the 2024 election could be the most expensive in U.S. history, surpassing the record of $5.7 billion spent in 2020.

Facing concerns from voters and pressure from lawmakers about his age and physical and mental abilities, Biden, 81, relented and announced his support for the vice president, who her party is supposed to formally nominate in early August.
