As calls grow for President Biden to withdraw from the 2024 race, his most likely successor, Vice President Kamala Harrisspoke to the media to defend the controversial anti-Israel protests that rocked college campuses this spring.
“They are showing exactly the kind of human emotion that should be shown in response to Gaza.” Harris told The Nation In an article published on Monday, focusing on the possibility of Harris replacing Biden in the presidential race, “Some of the protesters are saying things that I absolutely disagree with, so I’m not trying to agree with them in their entirety. But we have to navigate it. I understand the emotion behind it.”
During 2023-24 University Yearagitators and student protesters have flooded college campuses across the country to protest Israel’s wars, which has also led to a surge in anti-Semitic incidents and Jewish students publicly saying they feel unsafe on some campuses.
For example, agitators on Columbia University’s campus occupied the school’s Hamilton Hall building, while schools like UCLA, Harvard and Yale struggled to clear growing student encampments where protesters were demanding that the elite schools completely divest from Israel.

Harris added in the interview that Israel has been ravaged by war since the Oct. 7 Hamas attack, and she asked staff about conditions in the Gaza Strip, including what people eat and whether women have sanitary pads.
“I love to cook. So I told my team, ‘If you don’t have clean water, you can’t cook with flour.’ So what’s going on? I would ask questions like, ‘What are people eating now? I heard they’re eating animal feed, grass’ … so that’s what I was thinking,” she said.

“Similarly, I started asking very early on, how are women in Gaza doing in terms of hygiene? Do they have sanitary pads? These questions make people uncomfortable, especially sanitary pads.”

Israel has become a focus for the Democratic Party since last October, with the party’s progressive wing, including members of the “Squad,” facing fierce criticism from the Jewish community and conservatives for not taking a tougher stance against Hamas.
