This is an extraordinary legal case in New Caledonia. In total, nearly 1 700 kg of cocaine were imported from France to Cayo between 2022 and 2023. In this case, the two defendants appeared at the Nouméa Criminal Court on Friday, June 28, 2024. Deliberations are expected during the day.
The main defendant in the case has been imprisoned in Camp-Est since 2023 for drug trafficking. He appeared in court this Friday for importing, possessing, offering or transferring cocaine. And customs money laundering by transferring undeclared cash from New Caledonia to France.
The 47-year-old said he was addicted to cocaine and claimed he was selling the drug to finance his spending. March 2022 to February 2023the defendant claimed to have imported 300 grams, then 400 grams, and finally a kilogram of cocaine from France.
According to the General Customs Administration, his modus operandi was not typical. While under judicial supervision, the defendant used the authorization of the examining magistrate to visit his family in France. There, he continued to traffic drugs and hide them in objects, especially audio speakers.
The second defendant was brought to court for conspiracy to import and transport cocaine. The hearing revealed that the man acted as a middleman and went to the post office in New Caledonia to pick up the parcels sent from France.
In this case, the customs authorities that arrested the defendants demanded a fine of 50 million francs for the importation.
The prosecutor requested a six-year prison sentence for the main defendant and continued detention at Camp-Est. For the second defendant, a 15-month prison sentence was requested, 10 of which were suspended, with the possibility of commuting the sentence to home detention.
