The Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) ships JS Ariake and PSS KEDAM conducted an important goodwill exercise in offshore waters on August 20. The main purpose of the exercise was to enhance boarding and inspection capabilities and strengthen cooperation between the JMSDF and Palau’s maritime law enforcement agencies.

The collaboration comes at a critical time in the region as it faces growing challenges from illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing. In addition, the region faces a growing threat from drug crime, both in the air and at sea. Growing concerns over territorial borders and sovereignty highlight the need for increased vigilance and improved security measures.

The exercise demonstrates Japan and Palau’s commitment to maintaining maritime security and defending the region’s waters. The exercise underscores the commitment of the Japanese government, including the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force and the Japan Coast Guard, to supporting its regional partners in addressing these pressing issues. The continued presence and cooperation of these forces is essential to promoting a “free and open Indo-Pacific,” a vision shared by Japan and Palau.

This friendly exercise not only enhanced combat capabilities, but also consolidated the strong partnership between Japan and Palau in ensuring the security of their respective maritime areas.
