The Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) has extended power disconnections due to unpaid bills from August 15 to September 15.
The announcement was made by Jamaica’s Minister of Science, Energy, Telecommunications and Transport, Daryl Vaz, at a special press conference held on August 21 at the Petroleum Corporation of Jamaica (PCJ) in New Kingston and online.
Mr Vaz said the action was taken in light of the challenges many customers are facing following Cyclone Beryl and the current increase in bills.
“This means that there will be no power outages until September 15, which is commendable considering the suffering of so many people, even those who have had power restored but are unable to pay their bills because of the damage that has affected their livelihoods,” he noted.
Additionally, the minister said JPS will continue to offer flexible payment plans for those who need more time to pay their bills.
“We are processing requests on a case-by-case basis and customers can make a plan request through the JPS mobile app or by calling the JPS Customer Service Center,” he said.
Additionally, customers can express concerns to the ministry via email to jpscomplaints@mset.gov.jm and ourcomplaints@mset.gov.jm.
“We have set up two dedicated email accounts so that the ministry can follow and understand what is happening,” the minister noted.
The press conference was hosted by the Department of Power to address power issues regarding JPS billing and restoration and the regulatory work of the Office of Utility Regulation (OUR) in the aftermath of Hurricane Beryl.
