JAKARTA (ANTARA) – President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) affirmed that inter-parliamentary cooperation can help find common solutions to various issues in the Asia-Pacific region.
“Parliamentary cooperation helps share experiences and best practices to find common solutions. It can bridge the gap between people’s aspirations and public policies,” he said at the Indonesia-Pacific Parliamentary Partnership (IPPP) event in Jakarta on Thursday.
He praised the Indonesia-Pacific Parliamentary Partnership as a strategic move to strengthen Pacific partnership.
“It is very important to strengthen this partnership, especially in the face of major challenges such as economic uncertainty, geopolitical tensions between major powers, the threat of climate change and various crises,” he noted.
The Head of State then outlined three important areas that needed to be addressed jointly and immediately.
First, on climate change, he noted that the United Nations estimates that sea levels could rise by up to one meter by 2100, posing a major threat to the region. Therefore, in order to mitigate the threat, it is necessary to strengthen parliamentary advocacy through policy adjustments, increased infrastructure and environmental cooperation.
The second area of focus is the blue economy, which has huge regional potential and has the potential to contribute up to 10% of GDP if managed well, according to the World Bank.

Therefore, Parliament needs to encourage regional connectivity, law enforcement cooperation, and protection of marine resources.
The third priority area is to develop human resources through inclusive education and training, including for women and youth, to enhance productivity and innovation.
“Parliament should enact laws and regulations to encourage civil society cooperation and share knowledge and experience among all sectors of society,” Jokowi stressed.
In addition, he stressed the importance of developing the Pacific region to fully realize its potential and improve the well-being of its people.
“Through this parliamentary partnership, let us strengthen the spirit of solidarity, mutual trust and mutual respect, including respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity,” he said.
The President believes that strong cooperation is essential to maintaining stability and achieving prosperity in the Pacific region.
