JAKARTA (ANTARA) – President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) insisted that Israel’s assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, chairman of the Political Bureau of the Palestinian resistance group Hamas, was an intolerable act of violence.
“This is an act of violence, a murder that cannot be tolerated. Moreover, this happened on Iranian territory,” he said after attending the opening ceremony of the Indonesia Digital Financial Economy Festival (FEKDI) 2024 and the Indonesian Creative Works (KKI) exhibition in Jakarta on Thursday.
The president then said he believed the world was against this violence.
“I think everyone, including Indonesia, strongly condemns this violence and killing,” he said.
Earlier, Israel launched an attack on Haniyeh’s residence in Tehran, Iran on Wednesday (July 31). Hamas has confirmed that Haniyeh has been killed.
“The Islamic Resistance Movement Hamas expresses its condolences for the death of Ismail Haniyeh, a great son of the Palestinian people,” the group said on Telegram.

According to Hamas, Haniyeh came to the Iranian capital to attend the inauguration of Massoud Pezeshkian as Iran’s new president.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas called the assassination a “cowardly and dangerous” act by Israel.
Countries around the world, including Indonesia, were quick to condemn the tragedy.
“The killing constitutes a provocation that could escalate conflict in the region and undermine ongoing negotiations,” Indonesia’s Foreign Ministry said on social media on Wednesday.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called Haniyeh’s assassination a “despicable attempt to undermine the Palestinian cause.”
Meanwhile, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov said the attack was unacceptable and could lead to further escalation.
