Tegucigalpa– Around midnight on Friday, June 21, Renato Stabile, one of the defense lawyers of former President Juan Orlando Hernández, asked for a sentence for his 40-year-old client, saying it was the minimum.
Inner City News reporter Matthew Russell Lee reported on it, detailing a letter Stabile wrote to Judge Kevin Castel stating, “Mr. Hernandez is 55 years old, so a 40-year sentence is equivalent to a 40-year prison sentence.” Mr. Hernandez was sentenced to life in prison.
According to the publication, “defendant Juan Orlando Hernández, the former president of Honduras, presented the letter to help decide sentencing.”
In the book, he describes Joe as a former ally of the United States in the war on drugs, insists he is innocent and confirms that he was unjustly convicted based on the accounts of Honduran drug traffickers and murderers with whom he had worked for years, fighting, seeking revenge and trying to escape from prison.
“He intends to challenge his conviction by all legal means so that justice is served. He will never give up,” he said.
The letter states that Hernandez is scheduled to be sentenced on June 26, 2024, in the U.S. Southern District of New York, adding that “he maintains that his sentence should be limited to the statutory mandatory minimum sentence that this court must impose, which is 10 years for Count 1 and 30 years for Count 2, for a total of 40 years.”
“Mr. Hernandez is 55 years old, so the sentence for a 40-year-old man is equivalent to life imprisonment,” he pointed out.
In a fragment of the note sent to Castor and published by Inner City Press, he noted that the evidence in the trial against Hernandez was weak. “In short, the government accuses Hernandez of running Honduras like a narco-state, accepting bribes from some of Honduras’ biggest drug traffickers in exchange for ‘protection’ and information,” he said.
