WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden announced Sunday he is ending his re-election campaign after fellow Democrats expressed doubts about his mental acuity and ability to defeat Donald Trump.

My fellow Americans,
Over the past three and a half years, we have made tremendous progress as a nation. Today, the United States has the strongest economy in the world. We have made historic investments to rebuild our country, lower prescription drug costs for seniors, and expand affordable health care to a record number of Americans. We have provided much-needed care to one million veterans exposed to toxic substances, passed the first gun safety law in 30 years, appointed the first African American woman to the Supreme Court, and enacted the most significant climate legislation in history. America has never been more positioned to lead than it is today.
I know none of this would have been possible without you, the American people. Together, we have overcome a pandemic of unprecedented magnitude and the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. We have protected and preserved our democracy, and revitalized and strengthened our alliances around the world.
It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President. Although I intend to run for re-election, I believe it is in the best interest of our Party and our country to step down and focus on the duties of our Presidency for the remainder of my term.
Later this week, I will speak to the nation in detail about my decision. Now, let me express my deepest gratitude to all who worked so hard to get me re-elected. I want to thank Vice President Kamala Harris, who has been a great partner in this effort. And let me sincerely thank the American people for the trust they have placed in me.
I believe today what I have always believed: that if we work together, there is nothing America cannot do. We just have to remember that we are the United States of America.
