The MCA president said he was with PN chairman Muhyiddin Yassin at the time, who had asked Muhyiddin to submit a statutory declaration to the Istana before 2pm on November 21, 2022.
(FMT) – Gerakan president Wee Tiong Bahru said Gerakan does not think there is anything wrong with Perikatan Nasional chairman Muhyiddin Yassin’s controversial statement that he was not appointed prime minister after the 15th general election.
Liu Zhendong said that Muhyiddin’s claim that he had the support of 115 MPs and could form a government with a simple majority vote was true and correct.
“I was there (with Muhyiddin) the day after polling day on Nov 19, 2022. Then we received a message from the palace asking us to submit the statutory declaration we received.
“All of Muhyiddin’s statements are true and Gerakan has no objection to them.
“My presence on the day when Muhyiddin gave his statement to the police showed our support for him,” Mr Low told reporters at the Gerakan headquarters today.
Liew said Muhyiddin had submitted 115 statutory declarations to the former Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah, but he could not confirm whether any of these MPs had also pledged to support another candidate for prime minister.
Muhyiddin, who is currently under police investigation, was asked why the former king did not invite him to become prime minister after the 15th general election during a speech he gave during the Nigiri by-election campaign.
The Bersatu chief’s remarks triggered several police reports, calling for strict action against him for questioning the king’s authority.
Pahang Tengku Hassanal Ibrahim Anan Shah also expressed anger at Muhyiddin’s remarks, accusing him of belittling the former king.
Muhyiddin later defended his speech, saying it was not intended to insult the monarchy or incite the public, but was based on facts.
As part of the police investigation, Muhyiddin filed legal declarations from 115 MPs who allegedly supported his candidacy for prime minister shortly after the 15th general election.

Separately, Mr Low said Gerakan has appointed secretary-general Lo Ka Yong as the returning officer for the upcoming Crown by-election.
Mr Low, who is from Johor, will assist PN election chief Azmin Ali in the by-election to be held on Sept 28, said Mr Low.
He said Gerakan will also set up a special committee with the affiliated wing of Bersatu, the non-Muslim supporters wing of PAS and new member party Parti Malaya Progressive Party (MIPP) to attract non-Malay and non-Muslim voters in Bandar Mahkota.
“We understand that 35 per cent of the voters in Mahkota are Chinese, so we will set up this special committee to assist PN,” he said.
The by-election was called after Umno state assemblyman Sharifah Azizah Syed Zain died on Aug 2 while receiving treatment in hospital for internal bleeding.
Nominations will be held on September 14th and early voting will be held on September 24th.
According to the Election Commission’s 2022 data, there are 65,074 eligible voters in the Crown state constituency, of which 54.51% are Malays, 34.52% are Chinese, 7.72% are Indians and 2.69% are from other races.
