Japanese companies JERA and NYK Line have carried out the world’s first truck-to-ship bunkering of an ammonia-fuelled tugboat, which is scheduled to become the world’s first commercially operated ammonia-fuelled vessel upon completion in late August 2024.
The refueling of the ammonia-fueled tugboat, also known as A-Tug, took place at the Honmoku Pier in Yokohama Port on July 7 with the assistance of the Yokohama City Port and Harbor Bureau. Fuel Supply Agreement JERA will sign an agreement with NYK by the end of May 2024.
The fuel ammonia is produced by Resonac at its Kawasaki plant, partly from waste plastics, and will be used in future sea trials of the A-Tug. After the A-Tug is completed, JERA will supply the fuel ammonia to its operator, Shin Nippon Shipping Co., Ltd.
As protocol Starting in 2023, JERA, NYK and Resonac will study the establishment of safe methods for handling fuel ammonia and systems for transporting it to ports and receiving it in port areas, while also liaising with relevant parties to develop rules related to the supply of fuel ammonia to ships. NYK begins transformation In October 2023, Keihin Dockyard Co., Ltd.’s Oppama Works will replace the LNG-fueled tugboat “Pioneer” with an ammonia-fueled tugboat. The project includes replacing the entire machine, including the main engine and fuel tank, and requires cutting the engine room to remove the existing LNG fuel equipment and install new ammonia fuel machinery.
Ammonia powered engineIt was developed jointly with IHI Power Systems and ClassNK under the Green Innovation Fund Project of Japan’s New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) and was delivered to NYK on February 1, 2024.
