The Jamaica Customs Authority (JCA) is encouraging customers to adopt its latest innovation – the Contactless Clearance Process (CCP).
The invitation was made by JCA Director of Marine Operations Winston Gray during his speech at the Government at Your Service Marketplace, the 10th Jamaica Diaspora Biennial Conference held on Monday (June 17) at the Montego Bay Convention Centre in St James.
CCP facilitates JCA to inspect the customer’s goods without the customer’s physical presence.
The Client’s interests are represented by, and requests are made through, the Freight Forwarder.
Customs can receive timely notification and initiate customs clearance procedures in accordance with CCP, thus having the advantage of giving priority to imports.
Mr Gray noted that some customers are often uncomfortable with customs officials inspecting goods without their presence, even though similar procedures are common among international courier services.
The JCA recommends that CCP procedures incorporate strict safety measures.
Mr Gray added: “The checks are carried out in a sterile area under surveillance cameras and the officers carrying out the checks wear body cameras.”
The JCA facilitates international trade by ensuring compliance with customs laws and regulations, collecting duties and taxes, and protecting Jamaica’s borders against illegal imports and exports.
The entity aims to promote economic development, protect public revenues and facilitate legitimate trade activities through efficient and transparent customs procedures.
