Jakarta(ANTARA) –
The Jakarta provincial government plans to finalize a regional regulation to restrict the use of private cars this year.

“We aim to complete (preparation work) for regional regulations this year and submit a proposal next year for consideration at the Regional Legislation Committee (DPRD),” said Zulkifli, head of the electronic toll road system management department at the Jakarta Traffic Office.

He made the statement during a discussion at the Jakarta Public Transport Institute (INSTRAN) on Thursday.

According to him, the regulation is an effort by the Jakarta government to encourage people to use public transportation, solve traffic congestion caused by private cars, and reduce emissions.

Zulkifli said the regulations mainly cover four aspects: Electronic Road Pricing (ERP), Low Emission Zone (LEZ), parking management, and restrictions on the age and number of vehicles.

He affirmed that the Jakarta government and stakeholders are constantly improving multimodal passenger transport, which has not yet been fully integrated, to encourage people to use public transportation.

He added: “After all our public transport is working well and conveniently, we must restrict private cars and (encourage) people to switch to public transport while also carrying out traffic management.”

He further said that the cost of traffic congestion in Jakarta is estimated to be as high as 100 trillion rupiah (about 6.12 billion U.S. dollars) per year. This figure is based on a study conducted by the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs in 2018.

The estimated total loss is the accumulation of excess fuel consumption, travel time loss due to traffic congestion, the pollution impact it causes, etc.
