Jailed opposition figure Vladimir Kara-Murza in Russia has been transferred to a prison hospital and his lawyers have been banned from seeing him for two days, his wife announced on Friday.
Kara-Murza, 42, was convicted of “treason”, alleged false news about the military and participation in the activities of a “bad organization”. He was sentenced to 25 years in prison.
The opposition does not admit guilt and believes the persecution is politically motivated. Kara-Murza’s colleagues believe that the criminal cases against the opposition are retaliation by the Kremlin for their public activities.

She said the man, who was serving his sentence at the high-security IK-6 prison in Siberia’s Omsk region, was transferred to the regional prison hospital. She said lawyers who travelled from Moscow to the Omsk colony were told after a five-hour wait that Kara-Murza had been transferred to the hospital. The lawyers then went to the hospital and were initially told that Kara-Murza was not there, but later, after visiting hours had ended, the hospital confirmed that Kara-Murza had been admitted.
However, lawyers at the hospital were also denied access to opposition members today. “As a result, the lawyers were unable to meet with Vladimir and ensure that everything was going well for him,” said Yevgeniya Kara-Murza.
The Kremlin critic, who holds dual Russian and British citizenship, suffered a mental breakdown in 2015 and 2017 following serious illnesses, which he claimed were caused by poisoning by Russian security services.
He was arrested in April 2023 after criticizing Russia’s military offensive on Ukraine and urging Western countries to impose sanctions on the Kremlin.
